4 Ways to Make a Difference from Home

In troubling times for our community, it’s essential that San Antonians speak out and make their voice heard -- but you don’t have to attend a protest to make an impact.

Giving your time, energy and money to businesses, artists, city initiatives and local organizations are all ways you can help lift the community without leaving your home.

Here are four ways you can support people of color in your community and make your voice heard.

  1. Contact Community Leaders

We elect our mayor, congress members and senators to represent our interests. Uniting Wisdom volunteers consistently meet with community leaders to discuss ways our community can do better.

You can reach out to any of our community leaders and tell them your thoughts on police reform, how the city supports San Antonians experiencing homelessness, educational initiatives and more.

You can contact the mayor of San Antonio using this form.

You can submit a letter to the editor at the San Antonio Express-News by emailing letters@express-news.net.

You can find your representative in congress, senator, representative to the state board of education and more by entering your address on the Texas House of Representatives website.

  1. Donate

Organizations like Uniting Wisdom are taking tangible steps to combat police officers’ abuse of power, homelessness, economic inequality and social injustice in San Antonio. You can donate to our cause and help us make this city a better place for everyone to live.

Contribute to other organizations, like San Antonio’s NAACP chapter, the Texas Organizing Project and the San Antonio Area African American Community Foundation. Check out San Antonio Magazine’s list of local organizations for details about those and other organizations.

  1. Support Local

Supporting our local businesses, artists and restaurants will help lift up everyone in the community. You can find black-owned businesses from restaurants to health insurance on San Antonio Magazine’s list.

If you’re getting food delivered, check to see if the business offers delivery before heading over to a third-party to be sure as much of the proceeds go to the business as possible.

Like you would with any other business, give these owners a boost with positive reviews on sites like Google and Yelp and refer your friends when you enjoy the experience.

  1. Petition Online

Your social media channels are a great way to stay current and spread the word about local businesses, events, community organizers and more. Show your friends and family who you support and ask them to do the same on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

You can also sign our change.org petition to help as we pursue police reform and pass it on to your followers so we can help affect real change in our community.
